If meaning arises from mutual information linking entities to their environments, then all entities—from particles to people—can be seen as participating in an ongoing learning process that grows more sophisticated across the emergent planes of Matter, Life, Mind, and Culture. At each level, this process yields a distinct kind of learning—structural, genetic, cognitive, and symbolic—through which purpose and value deepen. Even at the most basic level of Matter, where “learning” is a loose metaphor, quantum Darwinism and dissipative structures reveal proto-adaptive selection processes in which only environmentally viable information persists, allowing stable forms to endure against entropy. Such prebiotic phenomena show that meaning and goal-directedness are not mere human inventions but are rooted in the fundamental dynamics of reality itself, with complexity and teleology emerging naturally as entities navigate their environments to maintain existence.
