THE CRUCIFIXION
32 1So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. And carrying his own cross, he went out. 2They spat on him, and took a staff and struck him on the head again and again. 3Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; they know not what they are doing.”
4And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means ‘The Place of the Skull’). 5And a large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 6But Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. 7The grass withers and the flower fades, but the nature of God abides forever. 8I am going to the Father.”
9Then, coming to the place called Golgotha, they crucified him. 10Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed from Galilee to care for his needs. 11And, sitting down, they kept watch over him there.
12Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. And they crucified them there—one on his right, the other on his left.
13The people stood watching, and the authorities even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God.”
14One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
15But the other criminal rebuked him. “Have you no fear of God in you?” he said. 16“We are being punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 17Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 18Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
19It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land. 20Finally, realizing that all had come to an end, Jesus said, “It is finished. 21Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”
22Saying this, he breathed his last. 23Then, bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
THE CRUCIFIXION
