THE TRIAL OF JESUS
31 1Those who had arrested Jesus took him to the high priest, Caiaphas, where the clergy and the elders had assembled. 2The chief priests and the whole Council were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.
3And some people stood up and bore witness against him, saying: “We heard him say, ‘God does not live in temples made by human hands’!”
4“He came to Jerusalem and entered the Temple and began driving out those who were buying and selling there!”
5“We heard him say, ‘We shouldn’t be striving to be sinless, but to be God’!”
“He even claimed, ‘I and the Father are one’!”
6Jesus remained silent.
7Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men bring against you?”
8And Jesus replied to him: “I have spoken openly to the world. I have taught openly in houses of worship and in the Temple, where everyone gathers. I have said nothing in secret. 9Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
10When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
11“If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
12Then the high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us: Are you God?”
13Jesus was silent.
14“Are you?”
15And he replied to them, “I am. And so are you. And so are all.”
16Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
17“He is worthy of death!” they answered.
18Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him and said, “Prophesy to us, God. Who hit you?”
19They took Jesus then from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. 20By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace.
21So Pilate came out to them, and he asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
22“If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
23Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own Rules.”
24“But we have no right to execute anyone!” they objected.
25So Pilate went back inside the palace, and he summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the Messiah of God, the king of the Jews?”
26“Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
27“Then, you are a king?” said Pilate.
28Jesus answered, “You are saying that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.”
29“What is ‘truth’?” retorted Pilate.
30Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.
THE TRIAL OF JESUS
10Ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος εἷς παρεστηκὼς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἔδωκεν ῥάπισμα τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰπών· Οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ;
11Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· Εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα, μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ· εἰ δὲ καλῶς, τί με δέρεις;
Σὺ εἶ;
καὶ σὺ εἶ.
16Τότε ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ λέγων· Ἐβλασφήμησεν· τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων; ἴδε νῦν ἠκούσατε τὴν βλασφημίαν· τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ;
18Τότε ἐνέπτυσαν εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκολάφισαν αὐτόν, οἱ δὲ ἐράπισαν λέγοντες· Προφήτευσον ἡμῖν, θεέ, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παίσας σε;
21Ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἔξω πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ φησίν· Τίνα κατηγορίαν φέρετε κατὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου;
25Εἰσῆλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἐφώνησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Σὺ εἶ ὁ χριστὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
29λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια;
