PREACHING TO THE RELIGIOUS
3 1Spiritually invigorated, Jesus returned to the Galilee. 2And he went to Nazareth, where he had been raised. And on the Sabbath day, he went, as was customary, to the local house of worship. 3There the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, so he stood up to read. Opening it, he found the place where it is written:
4“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind;
to set free the oppressed,
and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
5And so, he began: “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your presence.” 6(The eyes of everyone in the congegation fastened on him.) 7And he said to them: “Whoever has ears, let him hear:
You study your Holy Book diligently because you think that in it you have eternal life. Amen amen, I say to you, It is not the Book that has given you bread but God who gives you the bread that is true. 8It is the Book that is your accuser—that on which your hopes are supposedly set.
9Listen! When I am apart from religion, I am alive. But with the Commandments, ‘Sin’ sprang to life—and I died. I found that the very Commandments that were intended to bring life actually brought death. 10For, apart from such religion, ‘Sin’ is dead.
11Therefore, I have come to put an end to religion.
12The Commandments ‘Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery,’ ‘Thou Shalt Not Murder,’ ‘Thou Shalt Not Steal,’ ‘Thou Shalt Not Covet,’ and whatever other doctrine there may be—all are summed up in one simple idea:
13‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
14Therefore, let us stop judging each other! 15I know and am convinced that nothing is unsacred in itself. It is only unsacred for whoever holds it as unsacred. 16I can do all things—I will not be mastered by anything. 17Traditional religion is nothing; the Holy Book is nothing—for the word of God is still alive and active!
18Therefore, my dear friends: Avoid idolatry! Stand firm, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery, now that you are set free from ‘Sin.’ 19Day after day, every priest stands and performs his religious rites. Again and again he offers the same sacrifices, but none of these actually do anything to take away sins.
20There is simply nothing to such notions as ‘Sin’ besides the occasion for living right with people. 21Whoever has ears, then, let him hear:
We should not be striving to be sin-less, for the fullness of Deity lives in bodily form—in you. 22We should not be striving to be sin-less then—but, to be God.”
23Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.
24All the people in the congregation were furious when they heard this. 25They were all so shocked that they asked each other:
“What’s this? A new teaching?”
“He’s possessed!”
“Isn’t he just that carpenter’s son?”
(“Can anything good come from Nazareth?)
“He’s crazy!”
26And they got up, and drove him out of town. 27And they brought him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, and had in mind to throw him off the cliff.
28But Jesus just walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
29When his family heard about all this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind!” 30But when they could not find him, they traveled to Jerusalem to look for him.
31And so his fame began to spread throughout the region of the Galilee.
*PREACHING TO THE RELIGIOUS
