JESUS CONDEMNS THE CLERGY
26 1Then he looked around at them all in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said. “You brood of vipers! How can you who are evil say anything good?
2Woe to you, clergy, Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence!
3Woe to you, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look pretty on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead! So on the outside you appear to people as righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
4Woe to you, blind guides! You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 5You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
6‘Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!’ These rules, which relate only to ephemeral things, are based on merely human commands and teachings! 7They forbid people to marry, and order them to abstain from all kinds of things—which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth! 8For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.
9Beware these dogs, these criminals, these mutilators of the flesh!
10God does not live in temples built by human hands! Nor is he served by human hands, as if he needed anything! Rather, God is what gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 11God is our Source, if only people would feel their way back to him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 12For in him we live and move and have our being.
13Idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear. Those who make them shall be like them, and so will all who trust in them! 14Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
15You are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my message. 16Jerusalem, Jerusalem! you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you! how often I have longed to gather you children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you were not willing.
17So look: your house is left to you desolate! 18Destroy this Temple! 19What agreement is there between a Temple of God and idols? 20For we are the Temple of the living God! As God has said:
I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
21Do you not see all this? 22Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another! Every one will be thrown down! 23I will destroy this Temple made with human hands and build another not made with hands!”
JESUS CONDEMNS THE CLERGY
26 1Καὶ περιβλεψάμενος αὐτοὺς μετ’ ὀργῆς, συλλυπούμενος ἐπὶ τῇ πωρώσει τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν εἶπεν· Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, πῶς δύνασθε ἀγαθὰ λαλεῖν πονηροὶ ὄντες;
4Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, ὁδηγοὶ τυφλοὶ· μωροὶ καὶ τυφλοί, τίς γὰρ μείζων ἐστίν, ὁ χρυσὸς ἢ ὁ ναὸς ὁ ἁγιάσας τὸν χρυσόν; 5τυφλοί, τί γὰρ μεῖζον, τὸ δῶρον ἢ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ ἁγιάζον τὸ δῶρον;
Not one stone will be left on another. I keep on prophesying that. The conflict between Yeshua and the religious authorities is the most important trope in the New Testament. When you erase that, you miss the entire plot.
