SETTING OUT FOR JERUSALEM
22 1From that time on, Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must make his way up to Jerusalem. 2It was just before the Feast of Tabernacles, and Jesus knew that his hour had come.
3Jesus said, “I am with you now only for a short time longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me. You will look for me, but you will not find me, for where I am going you cannot follow.”
4When the time approached, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

5While they were on their way, heading up to Jerusalem, Jesus passed through some grainfields on the Sabbath day. His disciples were hungry, so they started to pick heads of grain and eat them. 6Some Pharisees saw this, and they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is against the Rules on the Sabbath!”
7“Are you really still so dull?” he asked.
8“Why do our disciples break the tradition of the elders?”
9Jesus sighed, then said, “O faithless and degenerate age, how long do I have to I put up with you?”
10But they started to challenge him, asking for a sign from Heaven and putting him to the test. But Jesus just replied, “Why does this age demand signs? A wicked, false age looks for signs—but none will be given it.” And he walked away from them.

APPROACHING JERUSALEM
23 1As they came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent ahead two disciples, saying to them, “Look: we are coming up to Jerusalem. Go to the village ahead of you and make preparations for us so that we can eat.
2But be on your guard. I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. 3Therefore, be as shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves.
4A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers, and went away for a long time. 5At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. 6But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 7He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 8He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.
9Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’ 10But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’ So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
11Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “What then is the meaning of that which is written:
‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone’?
12All that fall on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”
13In any case, I must press on, today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!”
14But as he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “O Jerusalem, if you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace… but even now it is hidden from your eyes.”
15When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred. They asked, “Who is this?”
16And the crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee!”
17Still others said, “He is the Messiah!” And a very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 18The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted:
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Hosanna in the highest!”
SETTING OUT FOR JERUSALEM
APPROACHING JERUSALEM
οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας;
