THE MOURNING OF LAZARUS
19 1Now, Lazarus, a friend of Jesus, had become sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2So the sisters sent word to Jesus: “Lord, one whom you love is sick!” 3Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he said to his disciples, “We must go back!”
4On his arrival, however, Jesus found that Lazarus had already passed away and been in the tomb for four days.
5Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many came to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 6When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, though Mary stayed at home.
7“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “I know he will rise again at his resurrection.”
8When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Judeans who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply shaken and became choked up. “Where have you buried him?” he asked.
9“Come and see, lord,” they replied.
10So Jesus, deeply moved, went to the tomb.
11Jesus wept.
12Then the Judeans said, “Look how much he loved him.”
13After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. And when night fell, he remained there all by himself.
THE MOURNING OF LAZARUS
