ON NOT WORRYING ABOUT LIFE
14 1And it happened that Jesus left Galilee and went into the region of Judea, to the other side of the Jordan. 2And as he and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 3Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. And Martha served. And Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
4Martha had a sister called Mary, who sat at Jesus’ feet, listening to what he said. 5Martha, on the other hand, was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. 6She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
7“Martha, Martha,” Jesus answered, “you are worried and concerned about many things, but few things are really needed.
8I tell you, do not be worrying about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. 9Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 10Look at the birds of the air! They do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. 11Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
12And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 13If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?
13So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 14For people chase after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 15But seek first the way of God, and all these things will come to you as well.
16Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
17And he called a little child to him, and sat the child among them. 18And he laughed and he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change course and start growing into children, you will not enter the place of peace!”
ON NOT WORRYING ABOUT LIFE
8Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν· μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἢ τί πίητε, μηδὲ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε. 9οὐχὶ ἡ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος;
10ἐμβλέψατε εἰς τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν οὐδὲ συνάγουσιν εἰς ἀποθήκας, καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος τρέφει αὐτά· 11τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται προσθεῖναι ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ πῆχυν ἕνα;
