INTRODUCTION

1 ¹Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ἡ φύσις, καὶ ἡ φύσις ἦν ἐν τῷ θεῷ, καὶ ὁ θεὸς ἦν ἐν τῇ φύσει, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ἡ φύσις. ²αὕτη ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν θεόν. ³πάντα δι’ αὐτῆς ἐγένετο, καὶ χωρὶς αὐτῆς ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἕν. ⁴ἐν αὐτῇ ζωὴ ἦν, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν πάντων· ⁵καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει, καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν.

⁶Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος, ὁ μύστης ἐν τῃ σοφίᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ, ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς. ⁷οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἵνα πάντες ἀληθῶς ζήσωσιν.

⁸Ἐπειδήπερ νῦν πολλοὶ ἐπεχείρησαν ἀνατάξ-ασθαι διήγησιν περὶ τῶν πεπληροφορημένων πραγμάτων, ⁹ἔδοξεν κἀμοὶ παρηκολουθηκότι ἄνωθεν πᾶσιν ἀκριβῶς καθεξῆς γράψαι.

¹⁰Ἀρχὴ δὲ εὐαγγελίου μοῦ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ ἀπὸ Ναζαρὲθ.

INTRODUCTION

1 ¹In the beginning was Nature, and Nature was in God, and God was in Nature, and God was Nature. ²It was with God in the beginning. ³Through it, all things have come to be; without it nothing has come to be that has come to be. ⁴In it was Life, and that Life was the light of all things. ⁵The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

⁶There was a man, a mystic in the wisdom of God, whose name was Jesus. ⁷He came as a witness, to give an account of the light so that all might truly live.

⁸Now, since many people have already taken up the task of setting down an orderly account of the events that unfolded, ⁹I too decided—after studying everything carefully for a long time—to write such an account.

¹⁰This, then, is the beginning of my gospel of Jesus of Nazareth.
